Case study: Countering climate scepticism – using psychological knowledge to communicate confidently

How ClimateMind empowers specialists and managers in the field of climate adaptation in a webinar.

Ready for communication that really works?

Learn how to deal with climate change scepticism in a targeted manner and effectively promote climate protection.

Project period: November 2025

Client: adelphi consult GmbH as part of the ‘Climate Adaptation Centre’ project

Target group: 350 managers and specialists in the field of climate adaptation from federal and state institutions, local authorities, social institutions, science and research

Format: 90-minute webinar

Initial situation

In their daily work, climate adaptation specialists and managers repeatedly encounter scepticism about human-induced climate change – whether in discussions with citizens, political decision-makers or even within their own organisations. This raised the key question: How can we communicate effectively and push ahead with ambitious climate adaptation measures even in the face of opposition?

ClimateMind's approach

ClimateMind designed input for the webinar based on the latest psychological research findings and surveys. The webinar covered the following topics:

  • Current figures provide clarity: Presentation of representative survey data on the proportion of climate sceptics in the population.
  • Understanding psychological backgrounds: insight into current research on the psychological mechanisms behind climate scepticism.
  • Strengthening communicative effectiveness: concrete recommendations on how specialists and managers can deal with sceptical attitudes confidently, in a dialogue-oriented and effective manner.

How was the feedback?

'With his lively manner and deep understanding of climate scepticism, Fabian Hirt captivated the audience at our Spotlight event at the Centre for Climate Adaptation. Over 350 participants enjoyed a presentation full of structure, clarity and inspiring conversation techniques.'

Relevance for other decision-makers

Anyone who wants to effectively promote climate adaptation must also be able to confidently conduct difficult discussions – with authorities or civil society. The ClimateMind approach shows that

  • psychologically based recommendations help specialists and managers convey their messages in a way that is appropriate for their audience.

  • empathy instead of confrontation enables communication to remain effective even in polarised contexts.

This is particularly relevant for organisations that are frequently in contact with climate sceptics and want to strengthen their teams in this area.
