Dear ClimateMind friends,

In 2025, international climate negotiations and national climate policy debates in Europe were shaped by slow implementation, growing political polarization, and increasing pressure to reconcile climate ambition with social and economic realities.

COP30 reflected this tension clearly: alongside important advances and renewed momentum in specific areas, it also revealed painful gaps, unmet expectations, and the limits of multilateral progress under pressure. Yet beyond formal outcomes, the COP underscored something equally vital — that cooperation, trust, and perseverance still emerge in human encounters, even when political processes fall short.

Throughout the year, ClimateMind worked with international institutions, public actors, companies, and civil society organizations to translate psychological insights into concrete action — from strengthening leadership capacities and navigating resistance to designing interventions that enable sustainable behavior in everyday contexts. These projects show that even in challenging political times, meaningful climate action is possible when people are empowered with the right psychological tools, shared purpose, and the courage to move forward together.

As we look back on 2025, we do so with immense gratitude for your support and trust. Your belief in our mission fuels our motivation and passion as we head into 2026, ready to tackle new challenges and embrace opportunities for growth and impact.

This newsletter reflects on the moments, projects, and learnings that shaped our year — and looks ahead to the ongoing work of strengthening the human foundations of climate action.

This year, we implemented 35 impactful projects (not taken the many projects within the Mercator Fellowship into account), including keynotes, training sessions, and panel discussions. We are incredibly grateful to the many organizations and institutions in Europe that placed their trust in us to deliver insights on climate and biodiversity psychology and communication.

In 2025, a total of 1643 participants in Europe joined our trainings, keynotes, and panel discussions. Every individual we reach (being a multiplier!) has the potential to amplify the ripple effect of skills, empowering others to take informed action in their communities and workplaces.

IDG-Program with KEFB

Who? The Katholische Erwachsenen- und Familienbildung im Bistum Essen (KEFB) is one of the largest educational providers in the Ruhr area and strengthens personal development, social participation, and democratic engagement.

What? We designed and delivered an intensive professional development program focused on the Inner Development Goals (IDGs). The program combined a series of interactive webinars with practice weeks, during which specific IDGs were consciously applied and trained in everyday work contexts.

Impact? The program significantly strengthened the organization’s transformation competencies. As a result, more ideas related to sustainability communication are now emerging within the workforce, being put into practice, and increasingly brought forward to decision-makers — supporting a more proactive and engaged organizational culture around change.

Behavioral Intervention Design with SWSG

Who? The Stuttgarter Wohnungs- und Städtebaugesellschaft (SWSG) is a municipal housing and urban development company committed to providing affordable, sustainable living spaces across the Stuttgart region.

What? We designed a behavioral intervention aimed at motivating residents to reduce their heating energy use — a critical contribution to lowering the company’s overall environmental footprint. Our approach applied psychological insights into habit formation and motivation for energy-saving behavior, resulting in a tailored plan that aligns with the everyday lives of tenants.

Impact? The intervention delivered a concrete, actionable strategy that enables SWSG to engage its residents in energy conservation. With this plan, the company now has clear steps to support tenants in saving heating energy — contributing to both environmental goals and resident well-being.

Lufthansa Group

Who? The Lufthansa Group, a global aviation company, is committed to advancing sustainability across its operations. We were invited to deliver a keynote to 60 senior leaders from ESG teams and related departments focusing on psychological barriers for sustainable behavior.

What? ClimateMind delivered a tailored, science-based keynote as part of an ESG offsite event. The session focused on the psychological foundations of sustainable decision-making, highlighting key drivers of behavior, common psychological barriers, and practical ways ESG teams can help employees and customers overcome these barriers in everyday contexts.

Impact? Participants gained a deeper understanding of the psychological mechanisms behind behavior change and left with concrete ideas for how to more effectively motivate both employees and customers to act sustainably. The keynote strengthened the ESG leaders’ ability to translate sustainability goals into actionable, human-centered strategies.

Interview with Bloomberg

One of our COP30 highlights was Janna's conversation with Bloomberg, focusing on psychological intelligence and emotional resilience as profoundly human factors for climate diplomacy. And sometimes something as simple as a deep breath can be the gamechanger.

Live on air on ARD radio (German)

Climate negotiations can feel distant and technical – but their outcomes affect us all. Janna joined the radio show “Mitreden! Deutschland diskutiert” live from Belém to explore how psychology can help us understand the human dynamics behind diplomacy – and what the world climate conference means for everyday life.

As we look toward 2026, we do so grounded in the lessons learned from both the challenges we faced and the successes we achieved over the past year. In our recent team strategy meeting, we sharpened ClimateMind’s direction: strengthening our collaboration with international political decision-makers to help climate policies gain lasting acceptance within civil society. Our aim is to contribute psychological expertise that supports ambitious climate and biodiversity action while consistently integrating social justice — because durable transformation only works when people feel included, understood, and treated fairly.

Together, we’ll keep pushing boundaries and creating a sustainable future.

Join the movement and reach out to us!

I wish you a year of joy, gratitude and courage.

Warmly,
Janna Hoppmann
