Case study: Between heat waves and shortage of skilled workers – climate resilience as a key competence in healthcare

How ClimateMind strengthens climate resilience at the German Care Day

Ready to take your team's resilience to the next level?

Learn how you can specifically strengthen your team's mental resilience.

Project period: November 2025

Client: The German Care Day

Target group: Management of healthcare facilities and nursing professionals

Format: Participation in panel discussion by Fabian Hirt (ClimateMind)

Initial situation

The healthcare sector faces a double challenge: an already strained system is confronted with the growing consequences of the climate crisis – not only structurally, but also psychologically. This raises the question: How can healthcare workers remain mentally healthy and capable of acting when heat waves and other extreme weather events are on the rise?

ClimateMind's solution approach

During a panel discussion at the German Care Day, ClimateMind brought a new and urgently needed focus to the debate: climate resilience for carers.

  • Science communicated in a sound manner: current research on climate resilience was presented in a way that was understandable and practical for the target group.
  • Empowerment instead of excessive demands: the focus was on encouraging carers – not on placing additional expectations on them.
  • Individual and organisational perspectives: both personal resilience strategies and structural approaches to promoting resilience were presented.

Results & Impact

  • Raising awareness of psychological stress: Participants were empowered to understand the climate crisis as a psychological challenge in the workplace.
  • Teaching specific resilience exercises: Practical tools were provided for participants to use themselves and share with their teams.
  • New food for thought for managers: It was demonstrated how organisations can also actively support climate resilience – an impetus for long-term change.

Relevance for other decision-makers

Climate impacts have long been part of everyday life for healthcare professionals – both physically and mentally. The discussion showed that:

  • Promoting resilience is a strategic issue for the future: if you want to protect staff and prevent sick leave, you need to systematically address climate impacts and strengthen mental resilience.

This is particularly relevant for organisations in the healthcare sector that want to combine sustainability, care and resilience – and thus act not only reactively, but also with a view to the future.
